What is Multiple Sclerosis?

Disabled woman in a wheelchairMultiple sclerosis is a neuro-degenerative disease in which the immune system eats away at the protective coating on nerves. Because of this, there is a disruption between the body’s limbs and the brain. Although it is not fatal, MS can be severely debilitating and can sharply decrease one’s quality of life. MS is much more common in women. Today we are going to discuss what MS affects, common symptoms, as well as ways to manage pain caused by it.

What does MS affect?
People with multiple sclerosis may experience coordination issues, loss of vision, weakness and chronic pain. Because the brain is unable to send messages to one’s body, their movement becomes impaired. They may know they need to move right to get out of the way of an upcoming, car but their brain is unable to send that signal to their legs to move before it’s too late.

Who does MS effect?
Multiple sclerosis is most common in middle-aged women of European descent.

What are common symptoms of MS?
Decreased bladder control, trouble focusing or decreased memory, blurred vision, tingling, and poor balance may all be symptoms of MS.

What causes MS?
Unfortunately, MS is a mystery to most doctors; they can’t seem to find a root cause. However, some studies show that smoking may increase your risk. It has also been found that MS often shows up after contracting a virus, such as Epstein-Barr.

If you think you may have MS or some other neurological disorder, contact your primary care physician today. Early detection is the best way to minimize complications.

4 Foods that Fight Colon Cancer

bigstock--175606618Did you know that colon cancer is the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the United States? And sadly, the numbers are on the rise, especially in young people. It’s not known why; however, possible reasons are due to increased rates of obesity, as well as sedentary lifestyles. There are several ways to decrease your risk of colon cancer, including eating a well-balanced diet that is full of fiber, getting regular exercise, avoiding smoking cigarettes and maintaining a healthy weight. Today, we’re going to share four foods you should add to your grocery list to cut your risk of colon cancer.

Fruits and vegetables
Let’s start with the obvious one here. We all know that a diet high in fresh fruits and vegetables is good for the prevention of any form of cancer. Fruits and veggies contain fiber, and this roughage helps to push the food you’ve eaten through your colon and into the toilet. Also, fruits and veggies are packed with nutrients. However, most people don’t eat enough. New research suggests 3 to 5 servings of fruit and 7 to 14 servings of vegetables each day. You should also aim for a minimum of 30 grams of fiber! Some high fiber fruits and vegetables to add to your list are split peas, Brussels sprouts and raspberries.

Tomato sauce
That’s right, eat more pizza and spaghetti sauce! As long as it’s a healthy, homemade version. Lycopene, a compound found in tomatoes, has been proven to reduce the risk of colon cancer. And cooking the tomatoes is even better, so add some pasta sauce to your weekend meal prep!

Whole grains
Whole grains are another food that’s high in fiber. But you’ve got to be sure you stick with the right ones. Go with oats, multigrain bread, farro or several others.

Foods high in omegas
Think fish — such as salmon — olive oil and chia seeds. The omega 3s, 6s and 9s in fatty fishes and oils help to reduce inflammation, which can cut your cancer risk. Just be sure you’re getting good quality fish and high quality oils.

Foods you should avoid…

Highly processed or packaged foods
Foods that are found in boxes at the grocery store are usually full of sugar and other additives. Sugar fuels cancer, so it is best to try and avoid it whenever possible.

Red meat
It is believed that eating red meat causes an increased sugar response, which increases inflammation.

Add the right foods to your meal plan, and you’ll not only improve your overall health, but reduce your risk for colon cancer.

What to do if you think your child has a concussion

When kids are in sports bumps and bruises are all too common. But sometimes it’s hard to know when a bump on the head is something more severe like a Mid-aged Doctor Examining Eyes Of Young Adult Male Patientconcussion. A concussion is a form of a traumatic brain injury in which the brain can get tossed around in the skull. They are typically caused by a fall or a blow to the head and in some cases can lead to loss of consciousness. If you have kids who play any sort of sport it’s extremely important to be able to determine if your child has a concussion and what you should do to help them.

Signs your child has a concussion…
1. Nausea and vomiting
2. Dizziness and blurred vision
3. Issues with their memory
4. Headaches
5. Balance issues and vertigo
6. Different sleeping patterns i.e. sleeping more or less than usual
7. Change in mood or affect

If your child exhibits any of these symptoms after a fall in sports or a blow to the head there are several things you must do.

Monitor them
Look to see if there are any changes in their mood or behavior.

Use ice to reduce swelling
If they have a bump from falling ice will help to reduce the inflammation and swelling. Ice should be used for 20 minutes on 20 minutes off. Never longer periods than 20 minutes.

Let them get some rest
Your brain heals itself when you’re sleeping. So rest is the best thing for your child. But still monitor them while they are sleeping to see if there are any changes in their breathing.

Make sure they get lots of fluids
Keep them hydrated with water or coconut water for additional electrolytes.

Schedule a doctors appointment
If you think your child hit their head, or they show signs of a concussion it’s important to get them to the urgent care right away. If they took a hard hit but it doesn’t seem like they hit their head it is probably okay to wait and get them in to their doctor the next day. But don’t let it wait. They still need to see the doctor in order to be sure nothing serious is going on.
