How Walking Daily Can Improve Your Health

And your wellbeing too!

Walking Or Running Legs In Forest, Adventure And ExercisingMost of us recognize that physical fitness is important not only for our health but also our well-being; however, very few of us find the time for regular exercise. With a busy, often grueling schedule, I sometimes find it difficult to make it to the gym. As a result, I feel tired and less productive than I should be. I finally decided it was time to start taking charge of my wellness on my schedule. How did I do it? A walk a day.

While I may not gain the muscle tone of someone who jogs or participates in a regular pilates workout, I find that walking for a few minutes everyday—even around the block—pays dividends. I feel more energized and the time away from the computer, television and office allows me to relax and reflect on my day. Sometimes, I bring my phone along and reconnect with loved ones to pass the time. It’s become a routine that I look forward to.

This isn’t simply a casual observation. Time and again, studies show that people who engage in brisk daily walks see improved health and mentality. According to the Independent, researchers in Germany recently found that adults who took quick-paced walks for 25 minutes per day were at significantly lower risk for heart attack. Walking (and exercise in general) also been shown to act as an antidepressant, heighten flexibility and may improve brain function. Walking daily can also lead to a better night’s sleep, reports The Guardian.

What simple daily routines do you follow to improve your health and wellbeing? I’d love to hear from you!

How to Avoid a Barbecue Accident?

Summer Backyard Bbq Grill Party SceneAre you enjoying your Labor Day weekend? Perhaps barbecuing with your friends and family? This is the last long weekend of summer. I hope that you are having fun.

Did you know that each year hundreds of people end up in the emergency room from barbecuing accidents? Burns and carbon monoxide poisoning are some of the common injuries. Take precautions to avoid these common injuries.

Here are some tips for avoiding barbecuing injuries:

  1. Never use a charcoal grill inside your home, your vehicle, tents or campers even if you have ventilation.
  2. Never use gasoline to start your grill – it can explode.
  3. Immediately after using starter fluid, put the cap on it and store it far away from the grill.
  4. If you dump your coal while it’s still hot, make sure everyone, including children, stays far away from the hot coals.
  5. Most accidents with gas grills happen close to the time when the gas tank has just been refilled.  Make sure the gas tank is properly connected and there are no leaks.
  6. Never start a gas grill when the lid is closed
  7. Never keep a filled gas tank in a hot car or a trunk.
  8. Don’t use regular forks and knifes to cook on the grill. Make sure you are using long handled utensils to avoid burns.

Remember grilling can be fun but it’s also dangerous. Make sure only adults are doing the grilling.

Have you ever had a barbecuing accident? What tips do you have? I’d love to hear from you!

6 Ways to Boost Wellness Over Labor Day Weekend

Happy cheering celebrating success woman at beautiful beach sunsIt’s the dog days of summer. Often in our hectic professional and personal lives we forget to take time out for ourselves, so as you head into Labor Day weekend make sure to focus on personal wellness. Here are a few sure-fire tips to make the best of this long, relaxing break:

  1. Eat healthy: Take advantage of the season and pick up some vegetables. Cooking at home can be a fun, relaxing, and a healthy alternative to eating out.
  2. Get a good night’s sleep: Many of us are fortunate not to have to work over Labor Day making it the perfect time to start a regular sleep schedule. Remember that there’s no such thing as “catching-up on sleep” but creating a regular routine right now can pay dividends for your health and well-being the whole year round.
  3. Take time to unplug: Try taking a day or even a whole weekend to step away from the computer or television. Going analog can be surprisingly relaxing.
  4. Do something special for yourself: Whether you’re working in the garden, reading a book, or writing in your journal, take time to do something independently satisfying.
  5. Exercise: For those of us who aren’t in shape, exercise can feel daunting but even a leisurely walk can improve your mood. With the weather transitioning to fall, this weekend is the perfect opportunity to enjoy the outdoors.
  6. Spend time with family and friends: In my opinion there’s no greater joy than spending time with the people you love. Whether you’re sharing a meal with family or reconnecting with an old friend on the phone, take time to enjoy your loved ones this weekend.
