How to Find Medical Bill Errors

Senior man depressed by a pile of medical bills. Isolated on whMany people get medical bills from a hospital stay and don’t know what to look for to determine if the bill is correct. Here is some of the things you should look for:

  1. No “Balance Billing”: You should make sure that if you went to a doctor who is in your “network,” you should not receive a charge for the visit (other than a possible co-pay). When the doctor charges you the difference between their normal charge and what the insurance company will pay for the service, this is called “balance billing.” You should not get a bill from the doctor if you went to doctor who was “in network.”
  2. Check Quantity: If you were in the hospital, you will want to check the quantity of items and services you are being billed for. For example, look at medications and the amount of days you were in the hospital. Hospital billing departments often make mistakes.
  3. Duplicate Charges: Make sure you were not billed twice for a procedure or a lab test.
  4. Upcoding: Many healthcare services have levels of care. For example, you can go to the ER for something simple – which should be billed at the lowest level of care or for something very complex – which will be billed at the highest level of care. You should look at the bill to see what was charged.

Looking closely at your bill can save you money.

I Love You, Dad!

DadMePortraitFather’s Day was always a special time in our home. As many of you know, I was very close with my father who was a United Methodist Pastor. Not only was he the best dad I could ever hope for, but he helped me raise my two daughters as I was a single mom from the time my girls were very little. There was no way to properly thank my dad for his love, attention, caring and constant presence in our lives.

My Dad passed away in 2013 but I feel him with us everyday. In the last years of his life, he struggled with his body not keeping up with his mind. Since I took care of him, it was hard to switch from the daughter, who always had her strong dad by her side, to the caregiver. Dad didn’t like it anymore than I did. But we made our way through the challenges, always having each other.

I learned so much about myself and him through those last years:

  1. I learned that neither he nor I had all the answers.
  2. There were no “quick fixes” that make a 90-year-old body feel in perfect health again.
  3. I learned the meaning behind the statement “take it one day at a time.” Often, we are trying to plan ahead and foresee all potential problems. As my dad aged, planning rarely worked. You have to be happy for what you have that day, as things might change again tomorrow.
  4. I learned to cherish being with him, as he was gone much sooner than I wished.

I’m so grateful that we had the time together at the end – to talk, to laugh.

My dad loved poems. When someone came to visit him and when he was in the hospital, he would entertain everyone with poems. I thought I’d leave you with one today.

Climb ‘Til Your Dream Comes True

Often your tasks will be many,
And more than you think you can do.
Often the road will be rugged
And the hills insurmountable, too.

But always remember, the hills ahead
Are never as steep as they seem,
And with Faith in your heart start upward
And climb ‘Til you reach your dream.

For nothing in life that is worthy
Is never too hard to achieve
If you have the courage to try it
And you have the Faith to believe.

For Faith is a force that is greater
Than knowledge or power or skill
And many defeats turn to triumph
If you trust in God’s wisdom and will.

For Faith is a mover of mountains.
There’s nothing that God cannot do,
So start out today with Faith in your heart
And “Climb ‘Til Your Dream Comes True”!

6 Steps to Submit Your Healthcare Bill to Your Insurance Company

Health Insurance Claim ConceptMany healthcare providers require you to pay for your healthcare service and then you submit the bill to your insurance company. It is a hassle that sometimes cannot be avoided.

So how do you do you get your insurance company to reimburse you for the bill?

  1. Get the proper form from your insurance company. You can often get the form from your company’s HR department or go to your insurance company’s website.
  2. Make sure you get a complete copy of the bill from your medical provider. You want a bill that details all the services you paid for.
  3. Ask your provider if the bill they are giving you includes all of the services and has the proper billing codes. An insurance company will not pay the bill unless the doctor has put the proper diagnostic and billing codes on the bill.
  4. Make sure your name and address is correct along with your correct birth date. Your insurance claim will be rejected if there are any mistakes.
  5. Once complete, submit the form with the bill. Many insurance companies now have a website where you can check to see when they received the form and when your payment was processed.
  6. Monitor your insurance company to make sure you receive your payment. If they reject the claim, find out why. Often, the doctor has made an error on the billing statement.

Following these 6 easy steps will help you get your insurance claims paid fast and easy.
