Wisdom from Dr. Joan Crawford in the Women’s Mind Body Wellness Summit

Dr. Joan CrawfordWhen I launched the Women’s Mind Body Wellness Summit, my goal was to bring experts in to share information on a variety of topics relevant to women today. We accomplished just that, and one of the astounding women who contributed is Dr. Joan Crawford.

Dr. Joan Crawford, D.O., is the Medical Director for Go Red for Women, American Heart Association Greater Detroit Area. She also is the Director of the Women’s Program at St. John Macomb-Oakland Hospitals and is the Director of Cardiac CT angiography, Non-Invasive Laboratory, Cardiac Catheterization Lab and Pacemaker Clinic at St. John Macomb-Oakland, Oakland Center.

When Dr. Crawford was 15-years-old, she had the opportunity to serve as an intern in a hospital and was able to watch an open-heart surgery. From that point, she knew what she wanted to do.

She taught us about heart disease, how it affects women, and what symptoms to watch for—which may not be what you expect. Did you know pain in the back between your shoulder blades can be a symptom of heart disease? I didn’t.

One piece of advice from Dr. Crawford was to watch for a change in yourself. If there is something that you usually can do and suddenly have trouble doing it, tell your doctor.

She explained how stress impacts heart health and how to set yourself up for a healthy lifestyle. There was so much to learn in my discussion with Dr. Crawford.

Wisdom from Lauren Gilpin in the Women’s Mind Body Wellness Summit

Lauren GilpinWhen I launched the Women’s Mind Body Wellness Summit, my goal was to bring experts in to share information on a variety of topics relevant to women today. We accomplished just that, and one of the bright young women who contributed is Lauren Gilpin.

Lauren is an attorney practicing in the metro-Detroit area, who recently married and shared her tips for planning a wedding and a life together.

She made me laugh when she started by saying that a good first step is to like the person you are going to marry. That certainly helps. From there Lauren dove in on open communication with your fiancé throughout planning and being clear on your budget.

She didn’t stop with wedding talk, however. Lauren also shared her tips for entering the workforce as a young professional and how to balance a new career with a new home life—something that she is accomplishing with grace.
